Does OTP Verification Reduce COD RTO?

Almost every serious COD app on the Shopify App Store sells OTP verification as a headline RTO-reduction feature. It is also the one CODFlip feature that has not had its own dedicated deep dive yet, so here is what OTP verification actually catches, what the real data says about how much it helps, and where it runs out of usefulness.

Each one of these orders still costs real money even though it was never going to be delivered: forward shipping, packaging, and blocked inventory for the days it takes to confirm the order is not coming back as a sale1, on top of the courier slot and warehouse capacity spent processing an order that had zero chance of converting. OTP verification is aimed squarely at this category: it cannot stop a genuine customer from changing their mind, but it can stop an order from ever shipping if the phone number behind it was never real to begin with.

Does It Actually Reduce RTO?

Read these numbers with the right caveat: Both figures above come from vendors selling OTP verification as a feature, not an independent, peer-reviewed study. We are citing them the same way we'd expect a reader to weigh any vendor case study: directionally useful, consistent across more than one source, but not a guarantee of what your specific store will see.

What makes the 30 to 40% range believable, beyond two sources landing near it, is that it lines up with how much of RTO is actually fraud-and-fake-order driven in the first place, rather than genuine customer indecision. SMS vs. WhatsApp OTP

SMS is universally reachable, since it needs no app to be installed, but Indian SMS delivery is inconsistent once telecom-operator filtering, DND routing, and delivery delays are factored in, and OTP messages competing with an inbox full of promotional SMS are easy to miss.

What OTP Verification Cannot Fix

It is worth being precise about the boundary here, since overselling OTP verification leads merchants to expect a bigger RTO drop than it can realistically deliver on its own. OTP verification does nothing for:

  • A genuine customer with a real, verified phone number who simply changes their mind before delivery.
  • A correct phone number paired with an incomplete or incorrect delivery address, still one of the most common RTO causes on its own.
  • A customer who is unreachable or unavailable specifically at the delivery window, regardless of how verified their number was at checkout.
  • Slower delivery windows giving a customer more time to find a better offer elsewhere before the order arrives.

Should You Turn It On?

  • High-fraud, high-RTO categories with low average order value: OTP verification tends to pay for itself quickly, since fake and impulse orders are disproportionately common here.
  • Stores that have already seen a spike in same-day, multiple-order patterns from new accounts: this is precisely the signal OTP verification is built to intercept.
